Seventies Spooks Win Wicklow Gaol Haunted Photo Competition

A spooky picture taken in Drimnagh over 30 years ago has been declared the winner of Wicklow Gaol’s most haunted photo competition 2010.  The picture submitted by Dubliner Kevin Woods was taken of his two first cousins in his grandparents’ back garden on Drimnagh’s Mourne Road.

On first glance, the picture features the two young children... however,  upon closer examination, there are clearly two ghosts on the right hand side of the photo – one is the silhouette of a little girl in a dress and bonnet; standing beside her is a more creepy hooded figure with a raised hand.

Kevin has won the super paranormal prize of an overnight investigation with ten of his friends at Wicklow’s Haunted Gaol.

Second prize goes to Lorraine Cullen for the “spooky skull” photo

and third prize goes to “spooky smoke face” taken by Jim O’Regan.

Both win two passes to the “Hear their Story” overnight paranormal investigation at Wicklow’s Historic Gaol.

The winning pictures were chosen by Patrick Mahood, resident psychic at Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, and Declan Flynn, spiritualist medium from Spirit Connections.  Mahood and Flynn make regular contact with spirits at Wicklow Gaol during the monthly overnight paranormal investigations.  Mahood and Flynn were overwhelmed at the huge number of entries to the competition:

“It is amazing to see so much evidence of paranormal activity in Ireland.  Choosing an overall winner was very tough.  We literally spent hours going through all the entries, and examining whether the spirits were actually just illusions created by light or shadows.  The winning picture was selected based on both its authenticity and the very clear photographic evidence of spirits.”

“The cameras of that time were very simple in today's terms and would not have had the photoshop technology available today. It was well worth keeping the photo for all these years.  ”

“The spooky skull is very strange as it is so clear and obviously a male looking over Lorraine’s shoulder. The face in the smoke is one of the strangest we’ve ever seen.  The face is very clear but there is nothing to suggest any human presence in the photo. Well done to the winners, and we look forward seeing you at the paranormal investigations at the Gaol.”
